Unfortunately
due to the fact that so many ISPs choose to underpay and/or
underqualify their support personnel, this page has become necessary - Sad as it is apparent that money
is more important than customer service...
This
Is how to really find out what DNS servers you have available [You are
free to use others, if you desire, using this same method].
IMPORTANT: It will save you much time and heartburn if you test any DNS server that is not in the
predefined list [see below]. Config will check to see if the DNS server entered is a valid one but it
cannot return a list of choices based on an entry that was made in error.

Click on the icon on the
Control Strip to run NSLookup2
|
|
Select "Name Server - NS" from the pulldown
menu in the upper left corner of NSLookup2 and enter the domain of your
ISP in the field to the right of the pulldown. For example: if your
ISP is "cox.net", then enter "cox.net" [without the quotes] into the field -
If it is "charter.com" then enter "charter.com" [without the quotes] into the field
and so forth. NOTE: The Domain Name of the service MUST be entered -
i.e. 'earthlink.com' will work while just
'earthlink' by itself will not.
|
|
Press the "Lookup" button and you should see
something similar to what appears above [without the blue highlighting
which has been added for emphasis]. The IP addresses of your DNS Name
Servers are the highlighted areas in the image [done for clarity]. The
lines above the highlighted areas are other information that NSLookup2
provides including the Name Server Names and, above that, other
information on what the the queried DNS server has provided which, for
this useage, can be ignored. Incidentally, the line following the
"Looking..." line informs you of the specifics of the query.
The following image shows what a lookup of the Name Servers for
charter.com looks like. Observe that the first four lines of output
show the nameserver names and the second four lines display the IP
addresses for each name in the first four lines.
|
|
IF
there are several Name Servers in the returned list you may choose any two of the IP addresses shown
and put those into the Primary and Secondary Name Server fields in Config.
|
Testing a selected
DNS Server:
If you have selected a DNS Server other than one of those provided in
the pulldowns in Config, enter the DNS Server IP address or name in the
field to the left of the Recent Servers pulldown and perform a lookup on a
well known domain name. Insure the results of the lookup DO NOT contain
the line "Switching to altServer...".
If you see "Switching to altServer..."
preceeded by some error messages, the server you have selected is NOT a
DNS Server and CANNOT be used.
